Set in the centre of a circle of mountains at an altitude of 300 metres South of Aude , for exploring Cathar
country.

At 300 meters altitude, South of Aude, Quillan is in the Cathar country, in the centre of a mountain cirque.

Romanesque church Notre-Dame (12th century), military castle (13th century), mansions, former baths rehabilitated and nowadays housing the Tourist Office
Around Quillan, beautiful natural sites are also to discover: parade of Pierre-Lys, St Georges gorges, Galamus gorges, Cathar castles, caves and cavities...

Walk along the Aude, hiking trails or mountain biking e practice water sports (rafting, kayaking...), fishing (course in 1st category, rivers in 2nd category), or climbing.

Just 10km or a little under 20 minutes from here, perched on a hilltop near Couiza, is the village of
Rennes-le-Chateau. This little village of less than a hundred people has become the centre of many
conspiracy theories, speculation and fiction of the last century or so. Books include The Holy Blood and
the Holy Grail (1982, following up on a couple of BBC documentaries) and more recently, the infamous Da
Vinci Code.

ALET-LES-BAINS
The nearest of these is Alet-les-Bains, 20 minutes away. Also the site of a fascinating ruin of an ancient
monastery, the thermal spa here was discovered by the Romans over 2000 years ago. As well as the
thermal spa, Alet is known for its mineral water, bottled here since the 19th century.

RENNES-LES-BAINS
Another Roman spa is 24 minutes away. Rennes-les-Bains offers the opportunity to venture out into the
river and experience the naturally warm spring waters running over you. There is also a swimming pool
and spa complex here which is open to the public. Unfortunately the old ‘Bains Forts’, traditionally used
as a washing place, have been closed, leading to the local joke that the town should now be called
‘Rennes-sans-bains’.

Fishing in and around Quillan is excellent, as is the fishing throughout the Languedoc. The River Aude is
a category 1 trout fishing river, teeming with Mediterranean brown trout, and there are other fish in the
Aude as well as several other small rivers and lots of streams nearby. There are some excellent lakes too
not too far away.

The Pyrenees mountain range runs along the border between France and Spain, with the small country of
Andorra nestling in the middle. Although the Alps attract millions of tourists each winter season the ski
slopes of the Pyrenees tend to be less crowded and less expensive than some of the best-known French
resorts. There are 200 summits in the Pyrenées over 2000m, and Pico d’Aneto (on the Spanish side) at
3404m is the highest point. The nearest slope is just thirty minutes away

CATHAR CASTLES
Depending on your definition of ‘Cathar castles’ you might claim anything from the five ‘sons of
Carcassonne’ to the 17 or so ancient castles that lie in the ‘Pays Cathar’ (Cathar lands). The castle at
Carcassonne itself is probably the best-known of the region, but there are many others worth seeing. Puivertis the closest castle…
