We moved to France more than twenty years ago and, shortly after arriving, fell in love with the village of Plouray. It’s a quintessential Breton village: there’s everything you need, from primary school to pharmacy, and it’s on great access routes to larger centres such as Rostrenen (10minutes, supermarkets etc), Carhaix (30mins, train station) and Lorient (50 minutes, with the stunning south coast golden sand beaches). On the edge of a natural reserve, the location couldn’t be better for anyone looking to retreat into the countryside.

We bought the house about fifteen years ago with the intention of completely renovating it. But life happens, and we simply haven’t had time. We’ve now reluctantly accepted that we’ll never complete our Plouray project and are passing it on to someone else. There’s the potential for two generous double bedrooms upstairs, an open plan kitchen/dining room/living room downstairs, plus a third bedroom downstairs. There’s a large bathroom on the ground floor, too, and we always thought this would be the ideal place for us to ‘grow old’: all of downstairs could be wheelchair accessible and the bathroom is big enough to make a great wet room.

Outside, there’s a small patio area; facing south east, you get the morning and early afternoon sun in an area big enough for table and chairs, plus some colourful pots. Parking, as you can see, is easily available at the front.

As I say, the small town of Plouray is well-equipped. It’s got a real sense of community, too, and I love that the ancient communal bread oven is still there on the edge of the village – a nice reminder of that community lasting through the ages. Less than ten minutes’ walk from the front door is a beautiful lake where there’s a small beach and, in the summer, a snack bar. The village also has a couple of play parks and football fields: it would be a great place to bring up children.

The house needs everything doing: while the waste connection is there, you’re buying a shell. It would work well for anyone looking for a project to create a ‘lock up and leave’ holiday home since it’s nestled right in the heart of the village, or first-time buyers wanting to try their hand at home renovations on a smaller scale. It’s a reluctant sale but we have finally decided to be realistic – we’re never going to get around to making it into the cute cottage it deserves to be, so someone else should have the chance.
